Llevelo were appointed to rejuvenate this multi-acre garden into a family friendly space fit for a couple who loved to host.
The clients were keen to include features such as a sensorial planting area, vegetable garden, hot tub, pergola and outdoor cooking area. Llevelo co-ordinated a range of contractors to ensure all elements of this project were delivered to outstanding quality.
Set in rural Essex, it was important that the landscape was in keeping with its surroundings although the clients also wanted to balance this with a few contemporary touches.
Unique site constraints included that the estuary was only a few hundred meters away; salt laden air prevailed as did the occasional gust of wind. Existing trees were to be retained and heavy clay meant plenty of focus on drainage.
The decking was abandoned for clay pavers laid on edge. A small detail on this was to source some hand made clay roof tiles which were laid between the pavers and slabs. We designed different patterns for differing areas to add a subtle yet interesting details.
The design is always in the detail. The finish is determined by the skill of the landscapers.
The large house had several prominent vistas to the garden which meant it needed to look good year round. A combination of varying hard landscaping finishes created textural contrast throughout the scheme so although there was a lot of paving, the design ensured it didn’t feel too much.
Clipped hedging and structural multi-stem trees punctuate the planting to create interest along the journey around the site, playing on light and shadow against the ground surface.
Multiple seating areas and a hedge that creates a ‘conceal and reveal’ element meant this really has become a garden the whole family can enjoy together or as individuals.
